Students in Free Enterprise Leading Through Action

September 23rd was dubbed Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Day across Kansas City by Mayor Sly James.  Not many student organizations can boast such an accolade but over the years SIFE has made an impact on their city and will host their organizations National Expo.

SIFE members have become well known on the UMKC campus for their work in promoting the entrepreneurial spirit that sets the US apart.  Harnessing that strength creates a positive change in the community.  It encourages students and business to voluntarily give back, without coercion by government, and moves them towards a common interest to construct a successful metropolitan center.

In Tuesday's meeting, students created working groups and discussed projects they wanted to complete in the next year.  Part of their mission is to put their skills and knowledge to work to be a resource to small start ups and local business.  This could mean designing an ad campaign that attracts a particular clientele, sending students to China to promote free enterprise, or giving financial advice on how and why students should set a budget.

The later has become a recurring commentary in the campus news publication U-News.  In each issue they give invaluable information to their fellow Roo's and advertise their cause.  This has helped their membership boom to over 70 members!

Each member is empowered to contribute and develop activities each year that others can be a part of.  Everyone is excited to be involved in their choice of projects.  This model demonstrates the power of individuals doing what inspires them to action.
